Tips to improve your child’s Handwriting.

Hi,

Does reading🧐 your child’s HandwritingπŸ“ seems a rocket science?. Well, do not worry, as Handwriting is a complex skill that begins with scribbling, drawing and gradually develops to forming letters and words. Children develop the dynamic tripod grasp essential for handwriting improvement around the age of 6. Handwriting✍️ is a multi-sensory activity that helps children develop reading, spelling, language skills, memory and concentration.

Handwriting is an essential life skill that helps children to express themselves and communicate. Messy and illegible handwriting✍️ can get in the way of learning and make it difficult for children to show what they know. Therefore, it is crucial to improve your child’s pencil grasp, legibility and penmanship skills for attaining success in education and life!.

Here are 20 tips to help improve your child’s Handwriting -

1. Ensure hand dominance in your child by consistently making the child use the same hand for writing and performing tasks that help refine his/her penmanship skills.
2. Ensure your child is using a correct pencil grasp✍️, which is the dynamic tripod grasp, where the pencil✏️ or penπŸ–Š is held with the thumb and the index finger with the middle finger supporting it. The pencil/pen rests on the bridge between the thumb and index finger, the fourth and little finger are tucked into the palm supporting the grasp.
3. Teach your child to have a relaxed grip and apply appropriate pressure to the paper with the pencil/pen as undue pressure is unhealthy for the child and leads to finger cramping and eyesight issues.
4. If your child finds it difficult to hold the pencil/pen in the correct grasp despite consistent efforts, introduce your child to pencil grips that help to achieve the correct pencil/pen grasp, prevent muscle cramps, reduce fatigue and improve handwriting.
5. Make sure your child has the correct posture for writingπŸ“ where he/she should use the table upright for writing. Turn the paper to a correct angle before writing by tilting the paper 45 degrees to the right for a right-handed child and 45 degrees to the left for a left-handed child.
6. Encourage your child to engage in exercises and sports that help strengthen, stabilise the shoulder muscles and free up the hand muscles for handwriting.
7. Strengthen your child’s fingers✋ and wristsπŸ€› by involving him/her in non-writing activities such as stringing beads, using cutlery, folding clothes, playing with playdough, lego and wooden blocks, colouring and cutting paper with scissors. Enhancing fine-motor activities improves the dexterity, control and coordination required to produce good handwriting.
8. Increase your child’s readingπŸ“– time as consistent exposure to neatly printed, well-proportioned letters help him/her to imitate the neatness while writing.
9. Make your child master pre-writing shapes as they combine to form letters, numbers and geometric shapes.
10. Teach your child letter formation in groups of letters formed similarly for formation, orientation and sound.
11. Make your child learn number skills by teaching number name, it’s meaning, formation, and orientation.
12. Teach your child to form letters in the correct direction. Emphasise the child to write from left to right, letters should be made from top-down and prevent inadvertent incorrect letter formation.
13. Teach your child variations of letter-size by showing them how lower case letters are half the size of upper case letters and help them distinguish between similar letters. Make your child write in a colour guided four-line notebook to get the proportions of the letters right. Make your child place the finger after a word and start the next word on the other side of the finger to achieve uniform spacing between words.
14. Create Phonological awareness by including rhyme, segmenting words into single and syllables sounds, blending sounds together, identifying sounds in different positions in words and manipulating sounds within words.
15. Make your child trace the letters and words in tracing books and worksheets.
16. Help your child to write with the right speed by teaching him/her the importance of setting a timeline and pacing his/her writing accordingly.
17. Make writing fun by engaging your child in interesting activities and games such as connecting the dots, mazes, writing in shaving cream, finger painting, word puzzles etc. that indirectly help to improve his/her handwriting.
18. Using the right stationery helps to create interest and makes writing✍️ less stressful for your child. Invest in pencils, pens and crayons with good grips, a good eraser so that the child is not afraid of making mistakes, bright coloured four-line book etc. to make writing interesting for the child.
19. Be patient with your child, do not pressurise him/her as things do not change overnight. Give your child opportunities✨ and enough breaks to make writing enjoyable.
20. Identify the underlying problem with your child. If he/she writes illegibly to mask spelling or grammatical errors, low self-confidence and low attention span. Find a solution to such underlying problems without belittling the child. Talk to your child’s doctor to figure out if the cause is a developmental delay or a condition to help solve the issue.
