Hi!,
‘Morning Sickness’ is the most common and one of the first signs of pregnancy. It is nausea and vomiting experienced by 70% of pregnant women that usually begins around the 4th week of pregnancy and resolves by the 12th-14th week. However, a few women continue to experience symptoms of ‘Morning Sickness’ into the second trimester and very few suffer from it throughout their pregnancies.
‘Morning Sickness’ does not harm the baby. However, one should consult the doctor if one
can’t keep foods, liquids down and lose weight as it could indicate ‘Hyperemesis Gravidarum’ a serious morning sickness that may require medical attention and hospitalization to protect the expecting mother and the baby.
If you are experiencing ‘Morning Sickness’ then do not worry!. Here are a few ways to help you tackle the queasiness and feel better -
Avoid odours that trigger nausea as your sense of smell is heightened due to pregnancy hormones.
Eat small meals regularly, as an empty stomach and eating too much at once tends to trigger nausea. Make sure to have healthy snacks between meals.
Munch on crackers, trail mix or cereal first thing in the morning and when you get up in the middle of the night to help settle down the churning acids in your empty stomach which triggers the queasiness.
Take your prenatal vitamins with a snack or right before bed. Prenatal vitamins that are higher in queasiness-combatting vitamin B6 help to decrease the nausea symptoms.
Consume ginger tea, ginger candy, peppermint candy , citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons as they help to reduce nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
Avoid spicy, fatty foods and opt for bland foods such as bananas, rice, dry toast, plain baked potato, eggs etc.
Drink plenty of water and fluids throughout the day.
Smell pleasant and fresh-smells such as lemon, orange or mint as it helps to provide comfort and relief from the queasiness.
Practice de-stressing techniques such as deep breathing, meditation and prenatal yoga as it helps to minimize the queasiness.
Get adequate rest as moving around can aggravate ‘Morning Sickness’.
Make sure to get fresh air and keep your space well ventilated.
Consult with your doctor about taking a prescription drug to treat nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.
