How to prevent and treat ‘Diaper Rash’ in Babies.

Hi!πŸ˜€,

A ‘Diaper Rash’ may sound alarming!. However, it is a common skin condition that babies encounter and is not a sign of parental neglect!😊. Diaper Rash can appear as a sore, pink, red, tender, flaky or scaly irritated skin around the diaper area, genitals or in the folds of the baby’s upper thighs. A severe Diaper Rash can itch, bleed or ooze. Diaper Rashes makes the babiesπŸ‘Ά uncomfortable, irritable and fussy!.

Diaper Rashes can result from sensitive skin, too-tight diapers, irritation from urine and stool, use of antibiotics, new foods and products, bacterial or fungal infections.

Prevention is better than cure!πŸ‘. Following a few simple strategies recommended below can help you prevent your baby from experiencing the painful Diaper Rash -

1. Make sure your baby’s diaper isn’t too tight as it prevents airflow and keeps the diaper area moist that can develop rashes.
2. Keep your baby’s skin dry and clean by changing the soiled or wet diapers promptly⏰. It is advisable to change your newborn’s diaper every 2-3 hours.
3. Give your baby regular diaper-free time by laying the baby bare-bottom on a large towel and engage in some playtime as it is a natural and gentle way to let your baby’s bottom dry.
4. Clean your baby’s bottom with warm water after each diaper change. Use a mild soap🧼 to keep your baby’s bottoms squeaky clean.
5. Use a moist washcloth, cotton balls or baby wipes to clean during a diaper change. Do not use wipes with alcohol, fragrance and harsh chemicals.
6. Be gentle when cleaning during a diaper change. Do not scrub or rub hard and pat dry the skin with a soft cloth or tissue.
7. Apply a diaper cream or ointment that contains zinc after diaper change to soothe the skin and prevent contact with faeces and other irritants.
8. Make sure your baby’s skin is dry completely before you put on another diaper.
9. Always opt for good absorbent, soft disposable diapers with elastic cuffs and a breathable layer that helps to prevent the buildup of moisture which can lead to a Diaper Rash.
10. When using cloth diapers, make sure to clean them using a mild detergent and rinse well to remove traces of detergent that can irritate your baby's skin. Avoid fabric softeners as they can irritate your baby’s skin.

Diaper Rashes usually go away within a couple of days by following the above-mentioned preventatives and a few simple steps to treat them at home such as -

1. Keep the diaper area as clean and dry as possible.
2. Ditch baby wipes and use warm water for cleaning until the rashes are healed. Use soft washcloths and cotton balls as cleaning aids.
3. Apply a thick layer of diaper cream or ointment containing zinc oxide to the diaper area after every diaper change.
4. Discard the cream, lotion, diapers, wipes, soap or food that you suspect has triggered the Diaper Rash for your baby.
5. Avoid giving acidic foods.
6. Give your baby a lot of diaper-free time to help the area to dry out and heal.
7. Give regular baths to your baby with warm water, gentle and unscented soap.
8. Give oatmeal baths as it helps to reduce the inflammation, pain, irritation and itching that comes with a Diaper Rash.
9. Consult a doctor if your baby’s Diaper Rash does not improve within 2-4 days of following home treatment, develops blisters, a fever, swelling and the rash oozes fluid or pus. The doctor may prescribe oral or topical antibiotics, antifungal cream or mild hydrocortisone (steroid) cream depending on your baby’s condition.
