How to prevent and treat ‘Heat Rash’ in children.

Hi,

‘Heat Rash’(Miliaria), commonly known as ‘Prickly Heat’ comes in the form of small, red, itchy bumps that cause a prickly sensation when pores of the skin become clogged and can’t expel sweat. Heat Rash is common in infantsπŸ‘Ά, toddlersπŸ§’ and young childrenπŸ‘§πŸ§‘ during warmer months as they tend to have warmer body temperatures than adults, less developed sweat glands and skin folds that trap sweat.

Infants and children most often develop Heat Rashes on the face, in neck folds, armpits, elbows, knee creases, inner thighs, buttocks but can appear anywhere on the body.

Causes :
……………..

Here are some of the causes for the development of Heat Rashes in children -

- Immature sweat ducts such as in a newborn.
- Exposure to too much sun, hot and humid environment.
- Intense exercise or physical activity.
- Use of oils, creams and thick lotions that block the sweat ducts.
- Overdressing and use of fabrics that do not allow sweat to evaporate from the skin.
- Sleeping under thick blankets that trap heat and perspiration.
Medications that increase sweat gland function.

Prevention :
.......................

Here are some of the ways that help to prevent Heat Rashes in children -

- Make sure your child is hydrated at all times as it helps to keep the body temperatures at healthy levels.
- Avoid the child getting overheated during play or physical activity by making him/her move to cool shady areas or air-conditioned space for a while.
- Dress your child in clothes that are made of breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that allows sweat to evaporate from the surface of the skin.
- Avoid dressing the child in tight clothing as it doesn't allow the skin to breathe.
- Avoid soaps with fragrances and dyes that dry the child’s skin.
- Avoid thick cream and lotions that can clog the pores of your child’s skin. Use creams and lotions that are chemical-free and help balance pH levels of the skin.
- Avoid thick blankets and sleepwear.
- Re-rinse the laundry as the residue from detergent causes skin irritation and contribute to Heat Rashes. Use mild detergent for your child’s clothes.

Treatment :
.......................

Heat Rashes are usually harmless and go away on their own with proper care and good hygiene practice. Following are some of the treatments for Heat Rashes -

- Keep your child away from the irritants that are causing the Heat Rash such as sweaty clothes, lotions, heat etc.
- Give your child cool baths with gentle soap and dress them in light clothing.
- Apply a cool compress to the rash with a clean washcloth dipped in cool water.
- Apply calamine lotion(a natural remedy for Prickly Heat) or anhydrous lanolin to the affected area to cool the skin, subside itching and prevent the child from scratching the rash as broken blisters can lead to a skin infection.
- Apply over-the-counter steroid cream such as hydrocortisone cream in low dosage to subside the itching.
- Give your child over the counter antihistamine medicine to help relieve itching and prevent the child from scratching the affected area.
- Consult with the doctor if the Heat Rash does not improve in a few days of treatment and the child has fever, chills, pain, swelling, redness or warmth around the affected area.
