How to teach your Toddler to Write?

Hi,

Toddlers🧒 are little sponges 🧽that soak up everything from their surroundings. Toddlers are eager learners with short attention spans!. Yes, you read it right. Younger children have shorter attention spans which makes it difficult for parents, caregivers or educators to make them learn certain skills within a short period!. One of the skills is ‘Writing✍️, which develops over time and involves many factors such as fine motor skills, memory, concentration and language skills that
affect its proficiency.

Toddlers learn writing skills as early as the age of 3!. However, teaching your toddler to write may seem like Rocket Science 🚀 . Well, trust me it is not! as long as you are patient, make it fun and work along with other developmental aspects that play a vital role in developing the early literacy skills of a child.

Here are some of the tips and ways that can help you teach your toddler to ‘Write’ -

1. Introduce alphabets, numbers and shapes with phonics and correlating sounds as it builds a sound foundation for writing skills.
2. Introduce your toddler to prints. Create print awareness by reading books with them. Let them identify the letters, numbers and shapes in books, newspapers, magazines, cartons, hoardings etc.
3. Work on strengthening their hand and palm muscles. Include activities such as playing with playdough, stickers, small toys, stress balls, maze and pattern boards, using tweezers, tongs, scissors etc. in their daily routine to develop their fine motor skills.
4. Introduce 3D alphabets and numbers to your toddler. Let your toddler feel the shapes of the letters and make them trace the letters, numbers with their fingers. Introduce them to finger tracing books and boards.
5. Before attempting to write letters. Introduce and make your toddler write basic strokes such as vertical stroke |, horizontal stroke ——, forward stroke /, backward stroke \, inside curve (, outside curve ), circles O, joining the dots etc.
6. Encourage your toddler to scribble. Scribbling helps your toddler discover the correct pencil grasp and build the muscles required for writing. Provide the child markers, chunky or regular crayons and chalks, golf pencils or regular ones. Let your child scribble on papers, chalkboards, easel boards and slant boards.
7. Introduce your toddler to various writing tools such as paintbrushes, sponges, stencils etc. to improve their writing skills.
8. Make your toddler trace the alphabets, numbers on papers. Introduce them to alphabets and numbers tracing books and worksheets.
