Signs & Symptoms of ‘Nutritional Deficiencies’ in Children.

Adequate nutrition is crucial for the healthy physical and mental development of a child🧒. A healthy micronutrient-rich diet containing vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, C, D, E, K, B-complex vitamins, fluoride, selenium, sodium, iodine, copper, zinc etc. is important for a child’s healthy growth, immune system💪 and wellbeing.

A poor diet, unhealthy food choices, the body being unable to absorb essential nutrients from the food can cause ‘Nutritional Deficiency’ in children which can have devastating effects on the child’s health. Therefore it is very important to know the signs and symptoms of Nutritional Deficiency in children to avoid health complications and promote the wellbeing of children.
Following are some of the signs and symptoms of Nutritional Deficiency in children -

1. Lethargy, children experiencing low energy levels and getting tired easily indicates being iron deficit or anaemic.
2. Impaired cognition, children with low levels of iron, zinc experience cognitive impairment such as difficulty in paying attention, confusion, weak memory and forgetfulness.
3. Hyperactivity and restlessness, deficiencies in B vitamins especially B6, zinc cause irritability, hyperactivity, impulsivity and restlessness in children. Hyperactive children have poor digestion which makes it hard for the body to absorb the nutrients.
4. Delayed speech and language, indicates a deficiency in vitamin B12.
5. Depression and anxiety, deficiencies in vitamins B12, D, iron, zinc deteriorates mental health and cause depression, anxiety and mood disorders.
6. Dry skin and hair, children with deficiencies in vitamins A, D, E and K2 experience dryness of the skin, hair and brittle hair.
7. Dental cavities, children with deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin A, D, E and K2 are at the risk of developing cavities.
8. Frequent cold, flu and increased infections, indicate a weak immune system, deficiencies of vitamin D and zinc.
9. Impaired growth and bone pain, Proper absorption of calcium for bone development require adequate vitamin D. Therefore, deficiency in vitamin D causes impaired growth, bone pain, muscle cramping, osteomalacia (softening of the bones), and skeletal deformities.
10. Dramatic weight gain and weight loss, indicates poor nutritional intake, malabsorption of nutrients.


‘Prevention is better than cure’, Eating a healthy nutrient-rich diet, following a healthy lifestyle and making healthy food choices contribute to the healthy development and immune system of a child.
