Causes of ‘Hanger’ in children -
———————————————-

A nutritious diet consisting of carbohydrates, proteins and fats is essential for the release of sugars such as glucose, amino acids and free fatty acids in the bloodstream to provide nutrients and energy to the tissues and organs of the body. The brain 🧠 is critically dependent on glucose for its functioning! drop in blood-glucose levels makes the brain perceive the situation as ‘life-threatening’ and ‘fight or flight response’ and triggers the release of stress hormones epinephrine and cortisol to counteract low-glucose levels. The drop in glucose and nutrient levels make the brain 🧠 release a chemical called ‘neuropeptide Y’ which increases appetite!🤤 and produces associated aggression!😡.

Usually, nutrient and glucose levels drop due to -

1. Not eating a nutrient-dense diet including carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

2. Eating junk food instead of healthy meals which increases blood glucose levels that come crashing down fast.

3. Skipping meals, especially breakfast and healthy snacks between meals.

4. Delaying meals/healthy snacks between meals.

5. Excessive activity and excel use without any additional meal/healthy snack.

6. Growth spurts, hormonal changes during puberty.

7. Diabetes.
